Lots of work going on! I like your FB page and saw something I'm curious about. On Oct 30 you posted a knife that was going to NYC with blue dyed camel bone scales. Can you tell me about the blade? Specifically, I really like the finish. Is it a forged blade or stock removal from bar stock? And is there some process you use to get that finish? I'm not looking to copy it, just curious about it.

Happy to share.
That is my signature finish. In fact, most such knives fall into my signature series collection. It is stock removal from any number of carbon steels. 1080 or 1095 most commonly. The heat treat is differential by way of refractory cement. That makes the hamon pop. I bring the finish to a mirror polish, then etch in ferric chloride. While etching, I wet-sand with 2000 grit to remove the carbon deposits and expose more surface. Keep dunking and soak for a few minutes each time. Keep sanding in between. This has a way of revealing the grain. After a Windex bath and rinse, I go back to the buffer for a light polish on a 'mostly' dry buff. That's it. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |
