bolsters and a carved sheath
Its been busy around here and I haven't gotten a lot of grinding done. I did manage to get 7 blades rough ground and sent off for heat treat in May. This one is my first attempt at adding bolsters. Blade, bolsters, pins and lanyard ring are stainless; scales are cocobolo. It came out pretty nice so I figured a decent sheath was in order. I've goofed around with carving but was my first try at using it on something. I drew out a poppy motif to fit the top and this is what I ended up with.

Wow, nothing like a nice set of bolsters! Great lines and paired with cocobolo a real beauty! Bolsters and knives just go together.
My next lesson is going to make my first sheath. That one really looks awesome too. Tony Z __________________ ABS Apprentice Bladesmith USMC Veteran VFW Life Member "Retreat? Hell, we just got here!" Captain Lloyd Williams, USMC Battle Of Belleau Wood June 1918 |

Thanks guys for the kind words.
eric, the rope stitch is easy. Its a single needle and you start by coming up from the backside through the first hole and then down through the second two or three times to set the stitch. Then after you have come back up through the first hole you skip the second hole and go down thru the third hole. As you are pulling the thread thru leave a little loop sticking up and come up thru the second hole pushing the loop to the outside. Now pull it tight, skip a hole and go down, come up thru the hole you skipped leaving the loop and pushing it to the outside as you come up. Pull it tight and go again with the skip a hole down, up through the hole you skipped. It'll make sense when you see the rope start forming. You need about 7 times the length of stitches as a starting thread length. Hope this makes sense. Robb |
