Wood treatment questions

Hello al
My father who is a wood carver sent me some wood for handles. I was not sure the best way to seal the wood once completed. I beleive some of the wood is walnut, maple and oak. All have been dried and were ready for wood carving.

Can I use a sealer or just my normal wax that I would put on handles. Please keep in mind I have only in the past used dymonwood.

Thanks.

I just use johnson paste wax if it is a hard stable wood, and the ones you mentioned should be hard and stable.

A nice tung oil finish would also be pretty good on those woods.

I would use any of the hardening oils. Unless the wood's spalted they should do the trick for you. If you wanted to stain the maple you could look for one that would seal the wood at the same time. If they are spalted, which I imagine that they're not, I would send them out for professional stabilization.

Sorry for the newbee question but what is spalted?

These are all regular 3x3x12" blocks that are normally used for wood carvng for turning. Purchased from a wood supplier that went out of business about 7 or 8 years ago.
All are solid straight grane solid wood

Spalting is actually partially rotted wood that has lines and splotches in it due to fungal and bacterial action. Some of it is quite attractive but it also has a problem of being soft in areas. To make good knife handles it needs to be reinforced by impregnating it with resins. If you want to see what some of it looks like, go to the Alpha Knife Supply site and call up the handle material and then look at their stabilized sock. They generally list some spalted woods there.

Used some reinisounce wax, but can't seem to get a luster on the wood. I let it dried and put it on the buffer. Just came out dull. Suggestions?
