Thoughts on etcher
I am not electrically incline so I am trying to find a etcher that is not hundreds on dollars. I would really rather make a etcher myself but know my limitations. What are your thoughts on Etch-O-Matic Starter Kit, http://www.etch-o-matic.com/knifemaker.htm. Has anyone used this? Is this a safe place to buy this? I want to get some special stencils also.
Thanks |

The basic Etch-O-Matic is used my many knife makers, I used one for nearly 20 years until I wore it out and bought another one. If you can get it at $80 on sale as it says on that website then you are paying the same price I paid 20 years ago.
It isn't too hard to build an etcher but if you aren't into electronics the time and effort to get the parts can be more aggravation than the little bit of money you save over the Etch-O-Matic ... |

I never used that site per se but its the 'official' Etch-O-Matic site so there shouldn't be any problem. I have dealt with Martronics which owns Etch-O-Matic and that website, they've been in business 41 years, and I had no problem. I don't know if they accept Paypal or not but if they do you could use your Paypal account to pay for it and that would also protect your purchase....

I've never seen negative feedback about the company.

I made mine using the tutorial here.
http://chriscrawfordknives.com/elect...nit/4535265119 Cost about $60 and The tutorial was very easy to follow. I have to give credit to Chris Crawford for the tutorial. He did a great job. __________________ Mark Last edited by mwhuston; 02-03-2015 at 11:30 PM. |

I made mine with the plans posted. Make your own if:
U have many of the parts laying around already U like the "I made it myself" feeling I feel confident enough w/ my electronic skills to plug my own work in to a hot socket. If u want to build to save $$$ and u have to buy the parts, u may actually spend more, a lot more. Buy the one Ray suggested it's a good deal and a new one comes w/ a warranty. I'd spend my time on a simple logo or name and get stencils ordered. There's one guy most of us use. I'm on my cell and don't have his name. Someone else can post it. |

Ok well I need to save up and get one. Im really torn of I truly need a etcher. I have no intent to sell my knives. I would save 80 bucks to spend on more material

If you don't plan to sell your knives then you can get by without an etcher. If you should happen to make a special knife that you would like to have your name on you might find someone who can engrave it. I took one to a small kiosk in a mall once - one of those places that sell knick knacks and will engrave something on it for you - and had them put my name on on a finished blade. That could work if there are still any malls out there .....

Here is the parts list and diagram that I am using to build mine. I am using a Powerstat (model 10C) instead of the transformer so that I can also use it to anodize titanium. Hope this helps. Bought the powerstat on ebay for $55. The parts lists is from All Electronics (http://www.allelectronics.com/)
