Is this anvil a good deal?
I have been thinking about getting into knife making and I'm shocked by how much anvils cost. I've been checking craigslist off and on (mostly off) for about 6 month and have never seen an anvil even close to a price range I'd consider.
Tonight however I found this Peter Wright 100lb anvil for $400 which seems like a great deal. It's more than I'm really looking to spend so I'm not sure if I'm willing to buy it but it seems like that is a good enough price that even if I make a couple knives and decide I'm not interested in making any more I could sell the anvil for what I spent without too much effort. Thoughts, how is the condition, if this a good deal or a normal price for other similar anvils, is it hard to find buyers interested in anvils? http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/tls/5968437987.html |

Looks like a great deal to me. That said, if you want to get into knife making but don't want to spend a bunch you can do stock removal instead of forging, then you don't need an anvil. Or, you can make an anvil from any solid chunk of steel you might find at a junk yard, like a section of railroad track. Lots of ways to make knives ...
