Ray Rogers and LiquidMetal?

I just stopped by Ray Rogers' website and saw a very cool chef's knife he made from LiquidMetal?. He was also kind enough to include an informational link about his experience working with the intriguing stuff.

I'll stick with 1095 for the time being, lol, but it's a great read for anyone who's interested in checking out what's new.

I found a number of comments about LiquidMetal? in the forum last night and also spent some time checking it out via google, so I have learned that it's been around for a while. It was 'new' to me, and although I have no desire (or the vast amount of cash needed) to actually work with it, I still think it's very cool!

One of my favorite parts of this forum is learning about the different types of steel people use. I have only worked with 1095 and L6 so far. I've mentioned before that my hubby is a blacksmith and that his main steel of choice when it comes to knives is 1095. If he preferred a different steel, my knife-making learning would undoubtedly have started with something else. He personally uses all sorts of steel for different types of projects, but I can always count on a steady supply of 1095 bar stock for my own use.

It's been a little while since I've been on the forum. It's been a very busy year, much of it spent in the shop. (I'll get a picture or two up soon.) The more I learn, the more fun I have, although I believe the most important thing I'm learning this year is 'patience.' Patience does not come naturally to me.. but I'm learning the wisdom of the concept that it's better to know how to do a few things well than a lot of things half-bootied.

Also, my wardrobe has evolved into jeans, T-shirts and long sleeved Carhartts, most of them stained at least a little. Anyone who meets me today would find it hard to believe that I used to be a very fashion-oriented, well-manicured woman without a hair out of place. Now, anytime I feel tempted to purchase a fashion item, I look at the price tag and think, "I could buy three band saw blades for the same cost" and move on.. Oh well, my fashion sense may have been obliterated but I have a LOT of new tools:-)

LiquidMetal was all the rage a few years back. One well known knife maker was touting it as the greatest thing since sliced bread and was starting to produce knives made from it. But then, he suffered a fatal motorcycle accident and without his advocacy and advertising money the material dropped off the public radar.

The truth is, LiquidMetal is a completely unsatisfactory material for custom knife makers to use for all the reasons I wrote in that article. Basically, it is a gimmick. The knives we can make from it perform poorly compared to steel knives. In manufacturing situations the material is poured into molds and can form a ready to use, pre-finished and razor sharp scalpel but that can't be done with home style equipment last I heard. Even so, what works well in an operating room isn't necessarily going to excel in the field.

In short, it's not new. It had it's moment in the custom knife world but now it's done and good riddance to it ...
