Somebody should be able to sell you a foot of 1084 but if they don't just use the 1080. It's very close.
As for edge angle, probably not worth the trouble. Some guys don't have any tools for setting an edge angle. For those who do, the angle setting mechanism isn't exact enough - my Edge Pro has a big blue dot on it for 19 degrees. I'm supposed to believe that anywhere in that blue area is 19 degrees and that the width of the blade I'm sharpening isn't affecting that at all? C'mon. Besides, I may have to re-grind some. Anyway, we mostly want to know if the edge will chip or take a permanent bend. As long as the edge is thin enough for that test the exact angle won't be terribly important ... |

Ray on my screen the knife pattern is 10 1/4" when I print I have different sizes but the closes is 9 1/4" that puts the blade and handle @ 5" & 4" from the middle of the ricasso w/ a 1/4 inch extra

Lee,
Not sure why you have that problem but your pattern is close and you know the correct sizes so just stretch it out to the right dimensions and go with it... |

I have a bunch of 1080. I think if I order another load of steel my wife might beat me to death with it

Ray, so is it going to be a requirement to submit a blade for HT testing in order to get in on the next KITH? Just wondering.

Naboyle, use the 1080.
Eric, thank you. Kevster, get with Eric and work out a way to buy a foot of 1084. Any others with extra 1084 please speak up. Tony, it probably should be but it won't be. By then, there will be some other new guy who wants to KITH but missed this little class and we'll let him play. But, doing this prep will raise evryone's confidence that they are producing functional blades and that is the goal. Austin, make the pattern as close as possible. The design is simple and the dimensions are clear so it should be easy. Even if you did print it out perfectly no two of us will cut and profile the blade absulutely the same so a little variance isn't a problem... |

Ray, no the edge's don't have to be perfectly identical but I feel like a 19 degree edge versus a 25 or 30 degree edge will make a big difference in the results. So I'm just saying lets all try and aim for 20. Ten on each side. 2-3 degrees wont break the bank, 10-15 will I think.
I've got some 1084 I can sell, lemme see how much though. |

It looks like I will be able to give the grinding jig that I go from Fred. If you want 20? I'll come as close as I can.

How do I measure the angle? I just always eyeballed it before. Do I need a protractor or something like that?

See what I mean? Sharpening tools like the Edge Pro and Lansky systems have methods for setting a particular angle. If you have a grinder with a platen and a work rest you can use a protractor to set the angle, just be very careful not to let the blade get pulled into the gap between the platen and work rest. If you don't have any of these things then just do what you usually do. I say again, this is to evaluate and improve on the HT and, possibly, the edge geometry you already use. We've already said we will re-grind and re-sharpen as required so don't obsess over it. Also, if anybody needs pointers on the HT process, this would be a good time to ask your questions ... |

A plastic protractor costs like a buck, so I don't see that as being an issue. Aim for 20 degrees and just do the best you can.
