I have two benches.

One is a plywood and 2x4 homemade job fixed to the concrete basement wall and the other is a 70x30 salvaged maple butcher block table I purchased for $30.00 from a resturant clearance auction. The top had been much-used and worn unlevel so I flipped the top over and now use the immaculate underside. Since that purchase, I have seen dozens of these tables listed in such auctions.

I have used solid core doors that have been scratched or dinged for the top and an old office desk for the base, the drawers were already there. Also you can get leftover cutoff counter tops from hardware stores that were either to long or the wrong color. The desk bases are great with legs already attached and most are u- hauls from yard sales or auctions.
