TI pocket clips
Looking for some input fella's..,
I want to try my hand at making some TI pocket clips.would .080 be to thick to bend appropriatly?obviously heat would be applied to bend.whats the standard thickness used in most cases.i personally like the thaught of a rugged thick clip. Appreciate any input and/or pointers on how to go about this |

The ones I get from Halpern Titanium are .040 thick. .080 seems a bit much but there's no real reason I can think of why you shouldn't at least try it. Let us know how it works out....

A lot of it depends on the width of your clip... If you have an inch wide clip you need less thickness than a 3/8"wide clip. If you need a really narrow one (say for on the handle of a balisong) .080 might be a good size for you.
As for the bending as long as you keep the bend simple it shouldn't be a problem. |

I make all my own clips out of .040. If you try it will anything over .060 you'll have breakage problems.

Thinking back to the demos, one was a piece of titanium barstock, perhaps 1 inch round, was forged under a power hammer into some artsy looking thing, the other a pair of tongs, lightest tongs you ever picked up. They may be in the NWBA archives.
Went out to the mailbox, thought I'd seen it all, Cabelas catalog, opened it and first page has camoflage bedding, another page hot camp showers, pump, battery operated and propane fueled. Well then here I sit in the blacksmith shop, wireless laptop, connected to the internet, bottled water and a plastic jar of Rolaids on the work bench, and a 100+ Mousehole anvil in the shop!!! __________________ Happy Hammering, wear safety glasses. One why I'm seen for heavey clips is to machine or stock removal of the middle of the clip to leave it heavey on the fastner attaching end and heavey at the end where it slides over the edge of the pocket to work as a ball point pen clip works. This would let you use your creativity to shape it and you wouldn't have to bend or heat it. Jim

I thought I'd better clarify what I meant by "breakage problems". The problem IS NOT when your bending them into clips, its when a customer calls up and says that they were fiddling around with the clip and broke it. I've had several instances of this occur when using Ti over .060. The issue has never occurred with .040....so that's what I choose to use.
