modifications???
hi, this is my first post, so if this belongs in another place, please move it there. i have made a few knives on my own, noting at all fancy, but they do what i have intended them to do. which is mostly take abuse. but his question is a modification to a store bought knife. it is a Winchester brand (so who knows who makes it) 3 blade lock blade knife. it is made to be a hunting knife, a regular cutting blade, a gut hook, and a saw blade. the saw blade is the one i need to modify. while it works fair on soft woods, it hardly even makes a mark in bone. i need this to cut thru the pelvic bone if a whitetail deer. and i really ma not sure how to modify this so it will really cut, rather than grind slowly. my eyes are not great, so i got a magnifying glass out, and looked at it carefully. and they have ground these with an angled cut going both ways. so it should "cut" in both directions. there is no kerf, and the blade is so thick, there is no way i would be able to bend it to make one. they alternate the cutting of the teeth, so that every other one cuts on the opposite side. basically, they look like cross sections of a pyramid corner, facing opposite one another. this results in two high points, one on each outside edge of the blade. oh, and the top edge is rounded off, i really have no idea why they did that. i can sharpen the regular blade, and the gut hook with no trouble. but this one i am not sure how to attack. if i can realistically sharpen what is already there, or if i need to grind it flat, and start over. i know you would like to see a picture, but i have had many problems trying to do so on many other web sites. i do not know what setting in my computer is stopping me from uploading them, but i have not been able to figure out how in several years of trying. i am good with my hands, but lousy with electronics.

As a rule, we pretty much avoid the whole question of saws on these forums since the general consensus among knife makers is that a good knife will do most anything that you need to do but if you must have a saw then carry a saw. That's not much help, I know, but truly that's what I'd do. I've got a small folding saw that cuts like a maniac and it's just big enough to get a good grip on. I also have saw blade on a Swiss Army knife that cuts well too but it's so small as to be useless for any life sized task like that pelvic bone. If you could go to a store and see either of these saws that would probably tell you how to modify the one you have better than anything we could say here....

What Ray said. Theres no knife that will do a Saw, or a Hatchets job, properly.
Get the right tool for the job, and you'll be happy. Also, trying to saw bone with a folding, non locking, pocket knife is just asking to break the knife. Lever it the wrong way, get hung up, and pow.

I have a nice little hatchet that's only 1/4" thick. That's what I use for the pelvise bone and its really quick. I just make sure it's razor sharp. There's no saw out there that would do the job as fast as my little hatchet. Well... Maybe a chain saw but...
