Knife pricing
I am new to knife making and I would like to know how I price a custom knife
I make the blades out of 5160 carbon steal I hand carve the handle ( right now i am using red heart i am also going to use mahogany) I force a patina on the blade (Looks like camo) That's the basics of what I do. Just wondering how I price my knives. The blade length is 7 1/2 inchs overall length is 13 1/2 Last edited by Knifemaker96; 10-30-2013 at 10:10 PM. Reason: I was on lunch break at work..... |

Well umm...
I haven't finished my first knife yet.....
It will be done in a few days. I am waiting for a few things to arrive in the mail first then I will post a Pic. I am just wondering how you guys price your knives. do you price them according to quality, labor, materiel or just how it looks? |

I do factor in labor. I look at my knife and decide how much i spent and how easy was it to make and charge what i think it's worth. I undercharge usually. I plan on raising my prices as my quality gets better

Pricing drives even experienced makers nuts sometimes. My rule of thumb is to take the cost of the knife to make including steel, materials, and supplies (belts, bits, epoxy, sandpaper, charcoal or propane, -everything you use), round up to the nearest $10, then multiply it by 3. So a hunting knife that has $35 in supplies & materials would sell for $120. This covers the cost of the knife, pays the taxes, and gives me some money to put back into the shop or to leave in my wallet.
Hope that helps. |
