Advanced Knifemaking class 2011
Phillip and I spent this past weekend helping Travis Daniel teach an Advanced Knifemaking class down at Montgomery Community College in Troy, NC. We had a great time teaching 5 students a few things dealing with more complicated aspects of making knives. It was fun but very tiring.
The class dealt with such things as tapered tangs, double bolsters, stick tangs, soldering guards and buttcaps/pommels, flat grinds, heat treating, and more. I shot a bunch of pics during the course of the weekend. Here are a few pics to get your interest peaked.
The knives that the students worked on during the class.  Mike Lamb flat grinding his blade. He did a great job, especially since this was his first flat grind.  This is me correcting a little warpage just after removing the blade from the heat treat oven. We were using ATS-34 steel so I had a short window of time to get the blade straight. BTW, this was warpage of a tapered tang.  Travis demonstrating how to properly solder a guard using an electric heat gun.  Travis sharing a few tricks on the grinder. Man that looks like it was a great time. All the knives look fantastic. I went back and looked at photo bucket and I didn't know you could use a electric heat gun to solder guard . Thanks Barry for sharing the picts.....steve

Steve,
The heat gun makes soldering guards seem easy. The heat gun limits the temperature much more so than a torch does. That's where the majority of us screw up the solder job, because we give the piece too much heat and the solder won't flow correctly. We used a combination of paste solder (get it from Pop's) inside the guard and the wire solder on the front face. Works like a charm. __________________ Barry Jones Knives
