Mini belt sander vs hand finishing. Anyone have any experience with them?
Hey guys,
Does anyone have any experience with mini belt sanders for hand finishing blades? I think they're 300mm x 10mm belts. Anyone here that's spent a few hours juggling little strips of sand paper on a sanding bar could agree that it's pretty much the worst part of knife making. There's nothing fun about it. I understand the tool wouldn't do it all, but it would at least maybe make getting the grinder marks out in 1/10th the time. Does anyone know of an oscillating sander that mimics hand motion? Something that is like 1x3 inches, can hold any regular sand paper, and has a throw of an inch would be amazing. (machine shop idea anyone?). I've seen little triangular detail sanders, but the paper for them is specialized and not worth the hassle. Thanks! |

Used to be a good thread on converting a palm sander into a blade finisher a few years back....might "search".
On the triangular hand-helds you can always cut your own paper. Problem with the smaller footprint is keeping from micro gouging the finish as you progress to finer grits. Hard stick hand sanding doesn't do this. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
