My Newbie Post

HI, Everyone.

My name is Wes and I am a newbie to knife making. Although, I am not new to always wanting to make things myself. I am a bowyer (maker of traditional hunting bows), a wood worker, and dabble in leather work. I have always been the type as to, if it needs done, why not do it myself, or at least try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

At first I just want to get my feet wet with a fixed blade hunting knife where the blade is basically done and I would finish it. Then move on from there. However, the one thing that has seemed to elude me is finding such supplies that are MADE IN USA. Really would rather steer away from made in Asia, China, Pakistan, Etc. Could anyone point me toward an American company or companies that seel blades and or blade kits.

I hope this is within the correct post forum. Thank you, Wes.

Welcome to the forum, Wes! Yes, this is the correct forum. For your kit blades, try knifekits.com Pretty much all of the knife supply houses like Jantz, K&G, USA Knifemakers, etc all carry kit blades. I can't swear that all of them are made in the USA but some of them will be and even the ones that aren't will be good quality.

Fill out your profile so we know where you are. It will help when we try to answer some of your questions in the future. Also, you may have knife making neighbors or groups in your area and this will help you find them ...

Hey Wes - as an alternative to ordering a finished "production" knife blank, if you send me a sketch of what you want, I could profile and grind it for you, provided you pay for the steel. Then you can send it off for heat treatment, clean it up, and finish it the same way you would finish a "kit" blade.

I'm not an "expert" yet, so if what you want is super-complicated, I may not be able to accommodate - but I can manage most designs pretty well at this point.

Let me know if you are interested.

- Dwight
