Awederian, I'm not all that experienced and most of what I've learned, I've learned from people on these boards. Yes, I've cracked a few books to make a study of steel but there are several, if not many, people who are more experienced than me. Your views are welcome here. For most of us we make blades because we like making blades. A very select few of us, myself not included, support ourselves and our families with making knives but I would say that the majority of those also have a real job or a pension. I would even say that those who get into this hobby/business/obscession are getting long in tooth, gray of beard, and thin of thatch.

Doug

I have the pleasure and advantage of working with a metallurgist/Welding Engineer during my job. He has 30+ yrs working for Phillips 66, however, his life's work has been limiting the effects of carbon on weldments. So, when I approached him with these questions, he just pointed to the book shelves.....and smiled. I am exited to get started in this.......

Couple of observations, if I may.
As can be seen from the posts above, lot of things to consider with selecting steels suitable for realistic knifemaking. Just a question...how will you that "don't know for sure" accomplish any form of reliable heattreatment of your mystery steel? Starting with a crapshoot and ending with a crapshoot is no way to learn. Except maybe how to sweat and curse like sailor. Always best to remove as many unknowns and variables from a process as possible to get consistant results. Just good science.

Ray kind of touched on the time element. Most of us are always strapped for "time", even us retired guys. The old addage of "How will you find time to redo something if you didn't have or take the time to do it right in the first place?", holds true here as it would in almost any instance. Just a reality check.

New to knifemaking and already thinking using mystery steel to make "damascus"? I can only shake my head.......

Slow down, get the basics right and consistant. You will be happier in the long run.
