Proper Grinder Height

One very basic thing, that that has a significant impact you your grinder, is having your grinder set to the proper height. Here's a short video of how and why.....

Not just grinder height, but all of your stationary tool heights should be customized to your height, both for comfort and safety.

Absolutely!
But it's always surprised me just how many never even consider it, and struggle, particularly with grinding. I can't recall a single student who ever came through one of my classes, that didn't later mention how much of a difference, for the good, that our short session on proper grinder height made for them.

The other thing I find kinda funny, is going into a shop, and seeing a grinder mounted on a wheeled platform/bench. Then watching the person(s) literally "chase" the grinder all over the place while their trying to use it. IMO, wheels nor any table/stand that is movable.... should be used for mounting a grinder.

Thanks Ed, great video! Getting that positioned right is a night-day difference in control. As well being comfortable for those long sessions. This is already a physical task so bringing unwanted physical strain isn't good long term.

One nice aspect to the Bur King 960's and or the Hardcore machines is that they have the option of adjustable arm positioning.

I have no choice, but to mount my grinders on a cart. Mind you it is a big heavy duty cart that even without locking the wheels down doesn't move. The exception to the rule. I cannot grind inside my apartment.

That's another great example of the "give-n-take" situations/circumstances that we all face daily in Bladesmithing/Knifemaking. We all have to work with some parameter/limitation or another... Making the best choices we can, for our own individual circumstance is just what we have to do.

But in general, for those who do have the option(s) of mounting a grinder in a solid, stationary position, and at the proper height for the owner/user, it will offer benefits that you won't get any other way.
