Hey, this is perfect! Can I join?

I've been working with kit knives for a while--really, just putting handles on ready-made blades. I first got the itch when I found an old Marbles knife at a flea market with the leather washers all rotted out. Then I found a store in town--Koval's (which just went out of business, dang it)--and tried a Russell blade. That was a miserable failure. Who knew that those cutler rivets just don't slip together when you put too much epoxy in, and then crumple when you try to use a C-clamp to force them together?

Anyway, my ability to put handles on knives has improved the last few years. I found this forum a while ago, and have been a lurker for the most part. I discovered the recycled materials KITH thread when it was close to the end, but used it as inspiration to make my first knife from scratch. I'd always wanted to make one that was all "mine" and I wanted to make one as inexpensively as possible (just bought a house, so surplus funds for materials and tools is slim). Most of all, I wanted to try out the process as I've read about here and other places to see if I would enjoy real knife making as a hobby. Guess what? I'm hooked!

So, in October I made a small skinning knife from (and many of you will groan, ha ha) an old circular saw blade, a piece of scrap oak from a broken picture frame, and a .357 magnum shell case (which I used for thong tubing). Other than the epoxy, the entire knife cost less than $3.00 and a lot of time. It's almost finished.

Now that I know I like making them, I've been wanting to try another stock-removal knife using better materials (steel, anyway). So this is the perfect opportunity! Where can I sign up?

Count me in!

That's it, I'm in. Need some motivation to get off of my butt and finish a knife or two. I have like 7 in the works. Not much progress in quite a while so now I need to jump start it. Dan aka IronMonkey (silhouette nickname)

Count me in too! I see you're from Austin, Peyton. Will they be able to handle two "masters" from the same city? Ha! Look forward to meeting you sometime.

It "officially" starts Jan. 1- and everything needs to be shipped within a week after May 31

After some more talking it's decided that the Newbie KITH starts Jan. 1!

Have fun and remember not to put it off too long, or you'll be hearing from me .
