paragon oven

Hello Friends , i hope this season is going great for ya. My question is this. I heat my oven to 1495 (1095 STEEL) and when i open the door to put the blade is the temp drops alot. Then it has to take time to come back to temp for the 5 minute soak.
Is it bad to leave it in for 20 minutes? Has the happened to any body else? I thought i'd making the oven go higher like 1550 then put it in because if i loose temp it will be close to 1495.
Thank you for your time, and MERRY CHRISTMAS, God Bless your families.

I put my blades, including 1095) in the oven cold. When the desired temp is reached then the soak time begins. So, if that works for me (and it does) then 20 minutes in the oven should be OK for you....

Thumbs up paragon oven.

thanks Ray, it has been on my mind and i have at 10 knives to heat treat. Buy the way i'm from Washington also. You are one of the best Men on any forum. Maybe i could buy you lunch sometime in the future. Oh yea do you put them in at start or do you let it come to a lower temp before you put them in. Thanks again to all of you. Also because people like you

Rich,

I put the blades in a cold oven and go from there.

We're both in the same state but I'm on the Canadian border (almost inaccessible in the winter) and you're nearly in Oregon. So, it would pretty much require a pilgrimage for us to get together. But, if you have the time in the summer give it a shot ....

starting with a cold oven will lessen the chance of thermal shock to the cold steel. Bob Levine Knifemakers guild , mentor
