Nakiri 1084, 5.5"

Have mercy on me guys. This is my first 1084 blade. Unfortunately the hamon that I tried for didn't work out and a warp appeared out of no-where, but I battled back with an hour of grinding and made something with some mustard and Louisiana hot sauce.

The scales are maple burl from my friend in New Brunswick rubbed with mineral oil and sealed with many applications of tung oil. The pins are black Micarta and a Frank Jacob's mosaic in the centre. I did the final edge at 15? and added a touch of the buffing wheel with black compound which wiped away the etch and added some "worn in" character.

Lots of fun making this one. I have only done stainless steel and this was an artistic departure for me. I hope that you enjoy.

Beautiful job. Great knife. I love the contrast. Way to go with overcoming problems. That is how you learn the most.

I think I will be doing more with 10xx carbon steel in the future.
I've got some water stones. I want to see how sharp I can get this thing.

Looks nice! I don't do much with hamons but I think that 1084 can have a little problem due to small amount of chromium in it.

I understood 1084 was hit or miss in the hamon dept., but wanted to give it a try.

I made a Nakiri with a 7" blade from 3/32" stock. Sharpened it at 7 degrees and polished the edge. That one would slice a ripe tomato by the weight of the blade alone and, of course, it was a very light blade ...
