Liner Lock Liner Material?
Does the liner for a liner lock have to be titanium, or will a carbon steel suffice?

Titanium is tough and it is a natural spring and does not need to be heat treated. Carbon steel can be used but, to be durable, it would need to be heat treated to spring hardness. And then, until you get the heat treatment really nailed down, you might have to deal with metal fatigue, i.e., the spring could crack and fail after an extended period of use.
Phosphor bronze is a substitute that some people use for titanium. It is also naturally springy and not likely to fatigue in this application. Stainless steels like 410 can be used without heat treatment if you're making a low end knife but for your best efforts nothing beats titanium... |
