Is it on video?

Seriously though,... I'm not going to rule out the idea of a straight peen just yet. However, I think the most logical companion hammer would be a long nosed style with two round faces with two different radii and diameters, sort of like some of the old rounding hammers only with a long nose on one end.

(I accidentally hit the edit button instead of quote on your last post Ray. It's too early, coffee hasn't kicked in yet. Sorry about that.)

Tai, do you currently use a similar hammer? Is the pein end actually flat, or is rounded? I am just curious about how the flat facet works for drawing rather finishing.
Maybe you could describe the use of this hammer.
Do you see it used for bladesmithing exclusively, or for all blacksmithing?

Thanks in advance.
Alden

Alden, yes I use similar hammers. I demonstrate them in my video. The peen end is flatter than a normal cross peen, but not really flat. It's got a slight radius in both directions, like a toroidal segment, or section from the outside of a doughnut shape. I often use the face at a slight angle to the steel driving the inside corner into the steel. In that respect it works similar to a set hammer for shouldering and also can be used to move the steel directionally. I use it to spread the steel in width, with the handle perpendicular to the stock and draw in length with the handle parallel to the stock. It can also be used diagonally to the stock for a little of both. I use it for blacksmithing, bladesmithing and forging in general.

Hi Dwane,

Yes, it is styled after some of the hammers we used over here, most like the one on the top in this pic, but with the "eye" section styled more like the other two and a nice broad round face on the other end. Is that the one?

Hey Mister, Were all 3 of these hammers ball peens before you converted them? Also are you going to supply the handle when yours is made or just the head?

Ray, I forged the one on top from scratch when I had my power hammer set up. I just wish it had more height through the "eye" for stability like the new design. The one in the middle I hand forged from a ball peen, but I wish it had a longer nose. The one on the bottom is as it came. I think I got that one in a trade a long time ago. Yes, they will come with a handle. I actually started with a 14 inch blacksmith hammer handle from "House Handle" and fit the "eye" to it. I'm also thinking that I may include a copy of the "Hot Forging Basics" DVD with the hammer.

Here?s some screen dumps from the computer modeling on the new design. According to the computer, it's going to come out right at about 4 pounds. The faces will need some dressing, but we decided it would be easier to do that part manually. I?ll probably do that part myself or just leave it up to folks to dress their own a little. I ran into some problems with pricing and availability of the 4150, so now I?m considering having them machined from 4140 instead.

Dwane, it was painted green, but the paint all wore off. I had other hammers that color too though.

O.K. Chuck!

It looks like we are going to go with 4150 after all.
