I just spent 3 hours hand sanding a knife that I spent 4 hours hand filing, with way more to go. Gotta Love it.



Oh Lord, won't you buy me a 2 X 72 knife grinder? My friends all use Baders, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So Lord ...

I believe it did work for Janis. She walked barefoot into the dealership in a plain earth mother type dress, got dissed by the salesman, and then bowled him over by paying green cash for the car....

That cold hard cash does have a way with people, I believe that money doesn't buy happiness, but it sure would get a lot of things that could help. :P

I'd say you need to review your technique. You're not working the steel in a hardened state are you?

I am not working it in a hardened state. Would it work easier hardened?

If you try filing in your bevels in the hardened state you will need to use diamond files or course EDM stones and your work speed will be way slower as a hardened and tempered blade is more wear resistant. Get the blade as close as you can with the files in the soft state. Maybe even a bit finer edge that the thickness of a dime.

Walt, if you think about what you are asking, you'll have the answer (of course Doug answered it as well).
Sounds like you have technique problems if your files are not dull. Shouldn't take more than 10-15 min per side on a 6" blade to drawfile it out flat. Sanding/rubbing-out takes a bit longer.

Hey guys I'm a newbie but I've noticed the same thing Walt has. I've used draw filling but it still takes several hours to do the bevel filling and sanding. Does anyone know if Texas knife supply sells their 1080 steel hardened or am I just doing it wrong.

Most steels you buy come in the annealed state. Like Crex said, might be using dull files.
