disk grinder

I have been bugging Steve Randall about abrasives, more recently for disk grinders, and want to broaden out with more questions to you guys. I have a 1hp motor with a 1/2" spindle, and want to add a teco vfd and a beveled disk. Is there a way I can beef up the 1/2" spindle to 5/8"? Is a "sleeve" appropriate? And safe? Otherwise I'll have to have my machinist make a disk with a 1/2" hole. Looking forward to any/all responses.

If you make a 5/8 sleeve I'd split it so the screw in the disc will clamp the shaft. But after I went back and read what I posted the sleeve would be pretty thin. May be better if your disc had a 1/2 whole .

I need to call steve and bug him again about SuperGrit. don't want to buy something that will not work.

A VFD requires a 3 phase motor. Is your motor 3 phase? Look up Wayne Coe he has a good list of motors and vfd's on his web site.

No Barry, it's a single phase, one HP, 3450 rpm swimming pool filter pump. Is there a way to put some type of rheostat or something on it?

There probably is a way but you will more than likely loose torque when you slow it down.

You could go with 3450 RPMs but you will need to slow down the disk or you'll burn your blades, especially after they have been heat treated.

I would opt for a 1750 RPM motor over the 3450. I've been using a disk grinder on my blades for 20 years. Always had single speed and 1750 RPMs. I still have to be careful when grinding heat treated blades.

There is a way to rig a treadmill motor and controls. Most are 2HP and definitely adjustable speed. Phillip and I have one but we have yet to set it up.

I think we need a seminar on converting stuff into usable equipment! I have a 1725 also, and an old potters wheel head that needs to be machined to 8 7/8 with a receiver for the shaft. I like the idea of the treadmill motor and speed control. Gonna keep my eyes open. maybe I can take the 1450 and figure out a way to make a surface grinder out of it.....

Would it be bad to mount the disk on a bearing and pillow block and drive it with a belt instead of direct drive off the motor. That way you could use variable size pully's to adj. speed.

Andy, I was thinking about that yesterday. I'm just trying to figure out a way to slow down a flat grinder so I can make the kind of knives I see in my head. I was hoping that using an old retrofitted potters wheel would do the trick, but 250 rpm isn't quite sufficient. $800.00 for a motor, vfd and disk is beyond me right now, although I do really like what Wayne Coe puts together. Thanks for all the help!
