forged w2 finished
I admit I don't know jack about forging. I watched a couple you tube videos of people making crappy railroad spike knives. Lol. But when w2 comes in rounds you have to bang on it. It's 3/4 inch stock. One the one hand I wish I had got the 1 Inch rounds so I could have a little wider stock. But on the other hand 3/4 is not easy to flatten by hand. Any way. Here it is as of 1 am when my wife texted me that the neighbors were gonna call the cops if I didn't stop banging on stuff. Lol
It might be my kith bowie. We will see. Last edited by ricky_arthur; 04-21-2015 at 09:21 PM. |

Slap some of that antler on there and sharpen it up, you're good to go ....

Look'n good. It may need a few tweaks here and there but you're well on your way to having it ready to grind. Just check and make sure everything is at the right angle and the blade's straight and your bevels are set and you'll be ready to normalize and heat cycle the blade.

Finally had some time to continue this knife. Did rough grind and clay coated the blade before heat treat. This pic Is after heat treat and final grind.
I still have much hand sanding ahead, but I wanted to see how the hamon turned out. Quick etch shows a very active Hamon. If I have time tonight I will finish sand it tonight and show the polished hamon. |

All your high eutectoid (sp) steels are stiff under the hammer. W2 is no exception. There is a tendency to figure "if I get it hotter it will move". Not always a good move, going by the first few forge pics you are forging pretty hot - big scale flakes. Hope you dropped the temp down when you got closer to blade dimensions. If you wire brush the big flakes off before getting into your final stages of bevel and distal taper refinement, you will have much fewer issues with final hand finishing. Either that or you will have to grind deep to get past decarb and scale impaction.
3/4 will spread pretty wide with the right technique and hammers, but takes a bit of practice. If the noise is too great dampen the anvil with chain and magnets. Make a big diff with the neighbors and, of course, Momma. Blade looks like it finished out nicely. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

I glanced at the first pic and thought "that's a weird spacer" then realized i was looking at the reflection of the mirrored brass guard. Nice work Ricky
