Sword Coal Forge uneven air flow
Hi all,
I am looking for some advice on a coal forge for swords with regards to the wind channel. I am almost done. Overall length in a little bit over 40 inch, and the wind channel in 2x2 inch. I have a problem when I tested the wind channel to see if the blower that I've got is strong enough. It is strong enough, but the problem is with the air feeding in from the one side, the flow of air only starts blowing out halfway to the end of the channel. No air blows out in the beginning. When I block off half of the holes on the furthest side, the air seems to balance. A question: Any idea if the air will balance out once I put the coal on? If not, does anybody have another solution for me to fix this, short off having to completely redesign and putting the air in from the middle? Any help will be much appreciated. __________________ Duane Salzwedel https://www.facebook.com/Salzwedel-K...6180547389862/ Instagram: salzwedel_knives South Africa Last edited by salzwedelknives; 11-07-2017 at 08:41 AM. |

My brother had a sheet metal and blacksmith shop and before we built a propane forge he had a coal fired one. He used a Y connection and blew air in from two sides. You will find that if you put the air in the middle the ends will not get air. Another way is to experiment first with some tape and tape up some of the holes until you get an even flow, it also help to make the holes larger on the opposite end from the air intake. So there are some solutions to your problem, I presume you can weld and therefore once you figure out how to get an even flow you can plug weld the extra holes, but use tape first. Oh Duane, the air will not balance out once the coal is on it.

Thank for the feedback. Taped it up (it ran from 3 holes at the intake side to 1 hole at the end) and it balanced out. One thing that does concern me with plugging the holes or even making the holes bigger, will the volume of the air not be different where there is less or smaller holes, even though the pressure is the same across?
Going to feed air in from both sides today and see how that works. __________________ Duane Salzwedel https://www.facebook.com/Salzwedel-K...6180547389862/ Instagram: salzwedel_knives South Africa |

It should be an even flow if you did balance it out. Also feeding in from both ends should take care of the problem if your blower is powerful enough. I worked a lot of blow-pipe and your problem is simply that you should have made a single line of holes first and then add holes as you went along, but it's not a hard fix.

Thanks jimmontg! I fed the air in from both sides and everything is balancing nicely now. I had a look at "The Complete Bladesmith" at their sword forge, but they don't say how many holes to drill, so that was an absolute guess.
Thanks again for the advice. It's much appreciated! __________________ Duane Salzwedel https://www.facebook.com/Salzwedel-K...6180547389862/ Instagram: salzwedel_knives South Africa |

You are welcome and I saw the stiletto dagger you made and it is a work of art. I can't wait to see one of your swords if that dagger is an indication of your abilities.
