Old Western repair

A guy from our archery club brought me an old Western brand knife and asked if I could make it usable again. The blade was bent at the handle junction and the tip was snapped off. All of the stacked leather was missing too. This knife has seen a hard life. The blade had a lot of deep scratches as well.

All it needed was a little TLC. The guy wanted a wood handle instead of the leather. I used walnut.

Verry nice work!

My Dad has one of those, while not in real bad shape, the leather is really beginning to deteriorate, keep trying to get him to let me re-do it in wood or properly sealed leather for him.

Never would have guessed the split tang, the leather must be kinda "H" shaped and stacked on. Nifty.

Hello RC,

I appologize for resurrecting this thread, but I'm new here and was wondering if the new handle is a one piece (did you modifiy the tang) or two separate panels. I have a Western knife in need of the same repair (original handle may have been leather) and the tang has the same configuration as this one. I bought it with two panels that look like pine that someone tried to make for it and I wanted something nicer.

Thanks,
Cuad
