Bloodwood deer skinner

My third knife ever; I'm quite new. Feels very comfortable in the hand and is well balanced, and I put a big swooping curve on the blade so you're wrist can pivot more during the skinning process. I forgot to photograph the vine file work on the tang as well as the sheath. This is my first post as well. Comments and criticism welcome!

Looking forward to seeing your work but you'll have to make a few more posts before the system allows you to post a picture....

I basically started making knives because I wanted a nice, small, fixed blade knife to carry with me, so I decided it would be cheaper to make my own, and I could also learn a new skill in the meantime, and I'm all about learning new things

Yeah, let us know how that works out for you. I started because I saw a $600 knife at a show that I wanted, a basic looking fixed blade knife. I could easily afford it but still balked at the idea of spending that much for a knife that I figured I could make for myself. So, I did a few kits, then started making some blades, bought a few machines, then made better blades, bought more machines, built a shop, more machines, bigger shop.....a common story among knife makers with a few years experience. Now, after making knives for 20 years and investing about $30,000 in shops and tools I can make all the $600 knives I want for almost for free ....

I can see this as being the hobby that I stick with for the rest of my life! I'm really excited! I already sold the first knife I made, although it wasn't heat treated properly, (the person knew) but I didn't feel too bad because it didn't cost them too much, mostly materials, and since, I've made two more as gifts and I am addicted!

I don't have all the time in the world because I'm studying and working 50+ hours a week at the moment, but whenever I have part of a day off I spend it working on whatever current project I've got going with all of my harbor freight tools

That's a good looking knife!

I like how you used your experience and knowledge of the application to dictate how it came out. Form follows function. Good on ya.

Spence, looks really nice for your 3rd knife! Really like the bolsters, wood selection, and use of pins and how they are arranged. Where in Missouri are you?

Well Spence, since you are in Springfield you most definitely need to look at attending Gary Mulkey's excellent Branson Hammer-In this September 27-28. You probably have been to one or know about it, but in case you haven't here is a little info.

Gary puts on a great hammer-in. Last years demonstrations had a lot of ABS guys there, many demos, notably the forging demo with Jimmy Crowell MS, Ray Kirk MS and Bill Lyons JS, grinding with Brion Tomberlin MS, silver wire inlay by Jerry Lairson MS, file work by Lyle Schow (my knife teacher/guru), amongst others. And a great cutting competition on day 2.

Great part is it is free unless you desire a table to sell your wares. Highly recommended. See Gary's link below.

http://mulkeyknives.com/vcom/index.php

Gary posts frequently on the KnifeNet forum and many others, and is a master craftsman, and makes some of the most beautiful period piece Bowie's and such. Look up his work on this forum. Anyhow, hope to see you in September!

Wow, thanks for all the info, tony! I have never heard of it, but I will most definitely be there! I could use some good instruction in person! I'll have to check Gary out!

Denim, I based my design off of this kind of skinning knife

But I made several modifications, as you can see, to make it feel and work better. We'll see how it actually performs this fall!
