Making Radius bolsters and handle
Just how I do it.

1. Knife and Bolster blanks
2. Milling bolsters flat , then they are hand sanded flat to make smooth. And I don't remove every little mark made by the end mill but most of them. 3. Using the knife as a template drill holes in first bolster 4. Drilling second bolster using the first bolster as a template. 5. Using the knife to mark the bolster . So I know where to cut the radius. Last edited by ArtinNC; 01-10-2013 at 09:49 PM. |

6. You can see the marked bolster.
7. My bolster fixture. 8. Cutting the radius in the bolster . Both at the same time. 9. Showing Radius cut in bolster. 10. I now finish the front of the bolsters. And fit rivets in the bolsters and the knife . Last edited by ArtinNC; 01-02-2013 at 11:10 AM. |

11. Now I ball pien the heck out of the rivets , I don't think you can pien it to much. If you pein the rivets tight the little marks that was left when you hand sanded the flat that lays againest the knife will not show . I have found out if you try to sand out every one of the end mill mark it seems that the bolster aren't flat any more.
12. And grind the rivets and bolsters flat 13. My fixture to fit the handle mat'l to the bolsters, the round button on the fixture is the same diam as the cutter you use to cut the radius in the bolster 14. Blade ready for handles 15. Handle slab in the handle fixture . Last edited by ArtinNC; 01-10-2013 at 09:59 PM. |

16. Showing my cutter in the router . The router should be mounted in a table, so don't route your fingers.
17. Wood routed to fit bolster. You need a cutter with the bearing where it is on my cutter and they are hard to find. That is so the rounded part on the wood fixture runs on the bearing. 18. wood fit to bolster. 19. And the handle fit to the knife as you always do it. To complete the knife. Thanks for looking |

Thanks for the post... this cleared up a couple of grey areas I had, exscpecially the rounded area where the wood and the bolster meet. Do you use any adhesive on the inside of the bolster blocks before pinning?

I have but not always . I'm not sure it would stop rust. I have a knife that I lost outside for about 6 months and never had any problem with rust at bolster and blade . And I don't even clean it.
And as tight as I pound the pins Glue isn't needed to help keep the bolsters on the blade. I do glue between the bolsters and the wood. |
