Using Bag-kote

Tried some Bag-Kote on a sheath a bit ago and really liked the finish. I've tried many different things and figured Sandy knew his stuff and gave it a shot.

I have a couple questions regarding its use though -- do you all dilute it? If so, do you just mix it in a little bowl w/ water, then apply with a dauber? How do you go about getting the "insides" of the sheath done?

Thanks a bunch!

Check on the bottle, but I think BagKote can be diluted with water at 50-50 ratio. You can use it in a spray bottle to put several light coats on. I have taken a completed sheath and poured the mixture into the sheath and then poured back into the bottle. Did that 'cause I forgot to do it before stitching the thing up. Best way is to coat before sewing. A dauber or soft cloth will also work to apply thin coats. I've gone to using TanKote lately and like it as well.

You can add up to 20% water per the instructions....

To get it inside do as Rick said or use a cheap spray bottle........

I read that you can dillute it, but is it recommended for sheaths? What are the benefits of dilluting it and do you all do it?

It works fine on sheaths when diluted and the major benefit in diluting is to save you some money.

Yes I use it most of my leather work, sheaths, belts, & holsters

Cost is one factor but for me dilution let's it soak into the leather better which gives it a satin finish rather than glossy - to get glossy use a full strength coat or two at the end. I apply in several THIN coats over a few days - letting each coat dry completely before adding the next.

Yes....yes....yes......

Chuck, how do you compare Bag-Kote with Tan-Kote? I've been using the Tan-Kote undiluted, several light coats and getting the satin or matte finish that I like.
