Two Recent Sheaths

The first is for a kitchen knife for my Mom's birthday. I designed it as a counter-top sheath and figured she could also safely transport it to their cottage if she wants. She just received it yesterday and loves it. I didn't stamp her initials very straight... still a novice at aligning those and am working with a very low-end lettering set.

I finished this one today for a skinner.

Very nice work! I like the knives as well as the sheaths!

If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner!

Cool, they look great! I like the recessed stitching in white cord. Good solid pieces. Great work.

Thank you! This forum has helped me quite a bit.
I'm getting the hang of saddle stitching.... Chuck's vids have helped me a lot along the way with all aspects of sheath making. Also some of Ian Atkinson's youtube tutorials.
I still have much to learn.

Those makers that have gone to the effort to teach future makers - either in person or by media - are very special folks who will live on in our memories long after they pass from this earth.

All those who are just starting out and looking for guidance should do a few searches on here. There is a lot of quality training that is either free or very reasonably priced that can help you grow stronger in your craft.

Nicely done! You have really come a long way and your attention to detail shows.
How's the digging shaping up?

Thanks Carl! We've had an unusually heavy snow year (as well as the rest of the country).
I won't be able to access until about mid-June which will make for a fairly short mining season this year. I'm not complaining because the mtn aquifer at the mine can use the water and my primary business is.... busy!

I usually say you can't have too much water, but my bro-n-law will argue otherwise (lives in Pensacola, FL)
Was studying your pics a little more, are you covering the backsets on you snaps and rivets that are exposed to the blade/knife inside the sheath? They can really scratch up a blade in short order.

Snaps - I recess the back piece of the male end of the snap into the leather as per Ian Atkinson's tutorials. Absolutely no chance of contact with the knife. He uses a French Skive for this but I have a good trick with the rotary tool which accomplishes the same result.

Rivets - My rivets penetrate two layers of leather... the back of the sheath and the strap itself. After setting, the back of the rivets are sandwiched and buried between the leather pieces which follow..... at least one layer of leather away from the knife. The backs are essentaily buried and no chance of them even seeing daylight again let alone coming into contact with anything. No chance of contact, not possible.

I appreciate the question Carl!
Any questions comments or criticisms are well received. I'd like to know that all of my bases are covered and it's the primary reason for posting my work.
Here's a wet-formed sheath I'm currently working on to show an example of what I meant by recessing the back piece of the male snap.

I'll go ahead and add this one I finished today.... it's for a small taxidermy scalpel.
This was a simple wet-form sheath. My only regrets.... I believe the thread I used was a few strands too thick for my stitch groove. Not terribly noticeable but it bugs me, the groove bulged a little in places.
