drill/mill?
As usual, I'm looking for some guidance on tool purchase. At an Intro class, I heard that a small drill/mill is the way to go to use in various aspects of knife handle construction. I will appreciate some opinions on what sort or brand or model is most appropriate or useful for these tasks. Thank you all for your responces. Hadley Perdue

Got rid of the SPAM, and banned the user. Now to the question at hand.....
Many knifemakers utilize a "bench top" mill, but with mills, the bigger and heavier you can afford, the better performance, and more uses your going to realize. I actually have two mills, a very old bench top "Central Machinery" (Harbor Freight) 1 1/2 hp. It weighs in at about 300lbs. It works fine for slotting guards, and light duty, but just isn't rigid enough, or stout enough to handle anything much bigger than a 3/8" end mill. When I decided I needed something bigger, I purchase a floor model from Grizzly...at about 2,100lbs, it handles all of the bigger jobs such as face milling damascus billets with a 3" face mill. Used machines can either be treasure or trash. I looked at a LOT of used machines prior to buying my larger Grizzly mill, and while the Grizzly may not be the super precision machine that some of the domestic used mills, most of the used ones I looked would have required a couple grand worth of work to get them back up to snuff. Get the biggest and the best you can afford. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

I have a Shop-Smithy 3 in 1 with the 21 inch lathe and have been very happy with it.

Mu Grizzly mill/drill has served me very well for almost four years of constant use. So far I have replaced one belt but no other problems. It uses R-8 collet tooling which is popular and there are lots of tooling choices.
A mill will do more then just slot guards. A fly cutter will precision flat handle slabs, cut fuller grooves, surface blade blanks, square tang shoulders, taper tangs, mill out choils and give you very precision drilling with the cross slide table. I paid about $1100 for this one and I have no regrets. |

mill/drill
Thank you B. Finnigan. That appears to be something I could use. What is the model number or nomenclature? Resp. Hadley
