Frontier Skinner

I just finished this one up..
This is the first knife I ever fully forged out other than a couple file knives. I was going for a rustic look to it.

14" OAL
5160
copper guard
3/16" SS pin
Elk antler

Thanks for looking!
~Nate

If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner!

I think you did just fine reaching your goal. Nice forge work.
And, don't be feared of hidden tangs, they've been around a very long time, proven themselves for thousands of years.

The answer can be found in:

Seriously, that's a cool looking knife. But, I have to ask: what are you planning to skin - a mastodon? A fighter or a camp knife I can understand, but a skinner? Butcher knife maybe ....

I'm not very good with blade shapes and names Ray....looks like a big ass buffalo skinner or something to me. I guess the person who buys it can call it a paring knife if they want..
And thanks for breaking down my statement and clarifying for me! I can always count on you!

Looks good Nate!

When the Europeans started trading with the natives they had some buffalo skinners that had blades 12" long. When I was reading about early HBC trade knives and other early iron tools the natives got they refered to some very large knives as skinners.
