Koa Hunter
I have been working on this one for a while. The steel is W2 with a hamon. The bolster is nickel silver, coined G-10 spacer, and a curly koa handle. I did not use alignment pins with the different handle pieces, but shaped each piece individually until I was happy with the fit. The koa handle is slightly proud from the spacer and bolster.
The sheath is hand stamped veg tanned leather, with a suede lined retention strap. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEOWKxErHqA |

I love that knife. Love the blade design and the simple clean lines. Very nice work and a very handsome knife. That's a beautiful piece of wood too!

BCROB, I used Parks 50. I ordered it from Kelly Cupples in the States. Went and picked it up across the border, and brought it back to Canada. Otherwise shipping would have been crazy! |

Shane,
Could you detail your finishing procedure on the steel? It's superb! __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

I hand sanded to 2000 grit, alternating directions for each grit to make sure all of the scratches from the previous grit were removed. At this point the hamon was ghostly. Next, I etched the blade multiple times in diluted ferric chloride, wiping off the oxides in between each etch. Finally, I polished and cleaned the oxides off with Mother's mag polish. |
