It's your knife, do what you want. Before you decide though, use the knife to slice up a cardboard box and maybe chop through a 3" tree limb. After that, I would imagine you won't have much trouble making up your mind ...

Yea I started thinking about that last night the pressure applied to the palm and fingers can be fairly heavy depending on use. So I'm gonna do something for a handle not sure what yet

Got some more work done this morning with the help of my buddy Gary and the advice of ray. We got the the the knife hardened and ready to finish up! gonna go to work on starting the handles later this evening.
The Parks 50 Ray suggested to use worked great it quenched really nice and hardened up well. so thanks for the suggestion and i have to thank Gary again for all his help so far its really cool to start in on this and get this much help and good advice!

this brings me too my next question!

Is cypress a good wood for handle material? Grandaddy has some huge tree slabs in his shop i'm pretty sure are cypress that he use to use for making clocks. the are some slabs about 2 1/2' foot across and at least 2 inches thick.

Starting in the scales

Then i marked and drilled my holes in the tang with the drill press and started on my scales. I used purpleheart that my buddy brought back with him from Iraq on his last tour.

then i pulled the scaled back to start shaping them on the belt sander.

got em pretty close and gave em a test fit

Kept on shaping to get the bulk out of em

Then i took the scales home and baked em in the oven at 350 for about a hour to bring out the nice purple color of the wood and then glued em up!

wondering about that bandaged finger? its just reminder be careful with a small razor sharp folding knife. cutting the thread off the sleeve of my coat at tractor supply the other night and bam! a nice little slice clean to the bone and back under my fingernail. bled like a stuck hog lol the sales guy i asked for a band aid was freaking out LOL about a hour later after i got the bleedeing to stop momentarily

still not really sure how managed to do that overa thread lol.
lesson learned!!!!!!!!!! PAY ATTENTION!!!
