Making "Damascus" micarta

Making "Damascus" micarta
This is my daughter Leonor, she will be helping me on this

Here you can see her cutting the clothings for this micarta. There are 12 pieces of each color, with a size of 10 x 3"

Every 2 pieces of clothing, I place marine resin like honey on a toast (I've used a total of 350 grams of resin)

Once I have the finished stack of clothings and resin, I twist them just using my (gloved) hands.

I place that twisted cylinder between two wooden boards covered with plastic bags to prevent glueing and then get that on my manual press and leave it there til it dries.

Straight out of the press, already dryed up.

Pattern after some grinding.

I hope you like it.

Regards,

Ariel

Great tutorial Ariel! You have a great way about showing how to get things done!

How many PSI does that put on the "billet"? And how expensive is the Marine Resin? I mean 350 grams sounds like alot.

Leonor looks like she has an attitude in that 1st pic.

Thanks again for the tutorial!

That's a great idea, and the results look great too. I don't have a press, do you think just putting weight on the boards would work? If so, how much do you think would be enough?

It looks like a plain old bench vise would also work as long as you don't try a huge chunk. Wax paper also will not bind with most adhesives including epoxy.

what was the resin and how does it hold up for you over time?

I know this is a bad question, but this cloth micarta is used for handles right? I also know it can be made out of wood. My question is what thickness should the wood be? With wood do you use the same epoxy?

Thanks,

Dear Ariel,

Can you give me more details about the resin you have used, like commercial brand, chemical composition, manufacturer.

And how thick was the final piece.

Thanks for your attention

Best regards
