My 1st Radial Pattern - photo

I hate to be hogging this forum so much Here's a picture of my 1st radial pattern. The four pieces will be forge welded together, squared up in some squaring dies, and drawn out to about 1" x 1". Then I'll make the "W" pattern. I used 1095 and 15n20 to make the billet, then drew it out after forge welding, then cut on a set of "V" dies to make the "butterfly" look, sliced that up and into what you see here. The yellow liquid is ferric chloride guys, be nice.

Awesome!
Makes you feel great doesn't it?
Like grammpa said, "every once in a while you mess around and do something right."
Just be extra careful from here, you can still mess it up re forging it all, the way you want it to be. It looks to be a perfect start. Show us the finished billet, will ya?
Thanks, be blessed.

Thanks Geno, Mike, and Romey! I got some great advice yesterday from Ron Clairborne about where to go from here, as far as developing that pattern. That is one great guy! He had several suggestions for me when I pick back up with the forging. Right now I have to replace a motor on my press ($79 HF 5 HP motor took a dump, almost got 6 months use out of it, one of those "get what you pay for" things ).
I'll post the next sequence in a few days when I take this to 4 radials, then 16. Appreciate you guys looking and advice!

You don't even realize you're in trouble, then all of a sudden the "Bowiemascus Virus" hits, and you're screwed. No turning back, no cure.

New photo

Here's a picture of the next sequence on the radial. Yesterday I forge-welded the 4 pieces together. Upon checking with an etch this morning, it looks like I didn't distort the pattern quite as much as I thought I was going to. But now, instead of drawing this out further and repeating the radial steps, I'm going to accordion fold this for a blade blank. Should have that posted by the end of the weekend.

remember to
eat -- drink
say hello to the family,
wave at friends as the leave
speak soft when your talking to your self ,
bath, at least once a week - this is one that family might be a better judge of -- but not friends they lie
the voices are normal
it ok to talk back to them
order more fuel--- steel
other than that I think you got it good job

You guys are a riot! Well, I messed up. I took the billet, did the accordion fold, forged it flat, and this is what I got. What I was after was the end view, repeated over and over, ala B. Buxton, but I'm left with this. Advice please! And I'll start over. As far as what to do with this blank, maybe a knife (it is kinda neat after all), or maybe bolsters.

This is a piece of the same billet of radial pattern, except I tightly twisted it to see what I'd get. Talk about tight! Maybe next time I should ease up a bit on the wrench. Well, I wanted to experiment after all

Actually I've built another can, just waiting for the ingrediants to get here from Arizona. I bought some meteorite powder, and will combine it with some other odds and ends and try to forge a space blade. The powder is from a Gibeon meteorite from Nambia, estimated age 4 billion years old, hit the earth several thousand years ago, and the crater found by a guy named Alexander in 1838. It's going to be quite a trip just holding that stuff! I can't even begine to concieve that kind of time frame. Pre-Fitz even probably.

Oh, man, I think I remember that! Someone had said the Dead were playing!

Actually, I think I remember seeing some of you guys there!

It was cool watching the rocks grind down into dirt!

Thanks for the laff! I just broke off two bits into a billet I was trying to open up. Just a little too much in a hurry and too much downpressure. Rats! Think I can just saw around it though and finish with a file.

Does everyone love this hate relationship with steel as much as I do? LOL
