Fibermascus. The Handle Material Equivalent of Damascus.








This Fibermascus is Lime & Olive light weight (High Layer Count)fabric in phenolic resin with a ladder pattern. Available scale size pieces are approx. 5" x 2 7/8" x 3/16" thick. $25 each + $3.85 priority mail shipping (up to 2 Lb.).

The Fibermascus is photographed wet to better show the approximate color in the finished state. Pieces are ground to shape on a wide belt sander and may require flattening before installing onto your knife.

Be one of the first to try some of this new material.

Rag micarta was extinct before i had a chance to see any of it. (must have been something toxic in the young micartas environment. hehehe ) The only picture i ever saw of it was a knife posted on Jerry Hossom's site:


Could probably make something similar if i had good discription of it's makeup.

1.For those of you that have seen some, was it alternate layers of different colors of cloth?

2.Or different colors of cloth all crumpled up together?

3.If it was all crumpled up was the cloth shreaded?

4.What colors were used or would be most desirable?

5.Anyone have any pictures of or a scrap pieces of the actual material? 8o

Wow, that's pretty great stuff. What are it's properties compared to canvas or linen or whatever micarta? Is it pretty much the same strength/durability?

Jerry Hossom posted a picture of some Rag Micarta for me. I will be working on a similar pattern in my material, as i have time.

The first thing that you might notice about Fibermascus compred to Micarta is the higher cloth content of the Fibermascus. There is only enough resin in it to saturate the cloth.

Phenolic resins are very durable. Should be very good material.

I played around with making some micarta a few years ago and had some good results. Never tried doing any patterns like yours. I'm picking up a hydraulic press that was used to make furniture soon that has a 1.5' plate on top and bottom. I may play around with the rag stuff again for my own use. Cant wait to see what you come up with.

I did make a test casting to get a better idea about how it is going to look. Will continue to work on it as i have time.
