LOOSE SPINDLE
I HAVE A SMALL VARI-SPEED DRILLPRESS, WHICH I USE FOR DRILLING ON MY KNIVES. IUSE IT FOR BOLSRERS, SCALE PINS, AND TANG HOLES. IAM STARTING TO GET SLACK IN THE SPINDLE AND IT WILL NOT DRILL 90 DEGREES TRUE. IS THERE SOME WAY TO TIGHTEN THE SPINDLE UP. |

It sounds like time to change the bearings. |

GENE, I DON'T THINK ITS IN THE BEARINGS. ON CLOSER EXAMINATION, THE LOOSENESS IS AT THE BACK OF THE DRILL PRESS. WHERE THE PRESS IS ATTACHED TO THE VERTICAL POLE. I BELEIVE ITS IN THE MECHANISM THAT ATTACHES THE DILLPRESS TO THE POLE. |

Ken- might be time for a new drill press. If the motor you have on your current one is a true variable speed (as opposed to pully speed change), you could mount it on a different machine. I got a step-pully benchtop drill press from Sears for $150, and use it for most of the tasks you outlined in your post- might even be cheaper than replacing bearings. |

If the joint at the pole is bad, it is shot.Nothing short of re-machining will fix it.(Big hassle) Like Don said, Save the parts for something else and get a new one. I buy a lot of tools at the pawn shops. I have 5 or 6 drill presses and didn't pay more than $50.00 for any of them. Even small presses work as long as they are accurate. Check them out good, then take 'em home and try to wear them out.I have only lost one in 20 years(same problem you described). Hope it helped and happy hunting. Wish it was better news. |
