Thermocouple help??

Ed I had bought a pyrometer a while back and it happened to get wet and ruined in my garage so, I saw on your site how to make one. Ordered the PID and the thermocouple. I was reading on Omega's site and they said that the Inconel sheath could handle higher temps than the stainless could so thats what I ordered. I noticed that you got the stainless sheath. Is there a reason for this? I believe that the inconel was only a dollar or two more. I'm hoping I didn't just buy a $22 piece of crap.

Nope! You didn't waste any money. Depending on how much you run your forge, a couple of extra bucks might be worth it. Because of how much I run my forge, it's not worth it fo rme. I ordered a couple of the Inconel sheathed thermocouples, and for me, they didn't last any longer then the SS sheathed version.

I generally order 3 of the exact same thermocouples at a time, and when the second one burns out, I order 3 more. For me, it takes about 8-10 months to burn through 3 thermocouples.

At one time I even dumped nearly $100 on a ceramic sheathed thermocouple, but it didn't matter.....still burnt that one up in about 4 months.....so now I just look at them as consumables, and buy the SS ones.

Thanks Ed. When I first hooked it up it wasn't reading correct. When I'd put heat to it, it would go backwards from 80 down to 0, then into negative numbers. So I read the direction, which just confused the hell out of me. Then I tried changing settings. Nothing. So I set everything back to the default settings. After reading the set-up info many many many times I realized what I did... I hook the polarity on the thermocouple wrong! Shoulda read those instructions first!
