starter tools for forging.
Okay I know that a forge and anvil is necessary to forge blades, but what else? Tongs, and 3 hammers, but what hammers, and how much steel? Dan |

tools
Dan, I use 3 main hammers but wish I had lots more. I use a 1 pound a 2 pound and a 4 pound. The 4 pound is a cross pien with a square sided face, it is my favorite hammer. I love to choke way up on it and do little taps for hammer finished stuff. I seem to be able to really control it. The 2 pound is a ball bein and gets lots of use. The one pound is a cross pien and I use it a fair amount for semi finishing work. I would love to own a 3 pound pr 4 pound straight pien.. I plan pn making it making it. I have several other hammers in lighter weights and configurations and they all get used. I don't think you can have too many and I have a feeling that everybody is diferent in what their favorites are. Tongs are the same way. ghostdog |

Re: tools
Boy, Dan, you never stop. I like that. Obvious things are, hammer anvil and tongs. Safety equipment as you please. Quench tank (just get another mop bucket when you get one for the forge, keep it full of water, even if you're doing high carbon. This can be used to cool your tools, hands, or put something out if it catches fire. Just don't keep it between forge and anvil - you'd hate to drop something on the way and crack it!), special quench medium for high carbon knives (like Goddard's Goop, or a variety of oils - another topic all by itself). Lotsa files for scraping off cold shuts and doing final cleanup. Sandpaper for finishing. Bandaids and an aloe plant. A stock of "I love you" cards from Hallmark, randomly given to your wife at key moments of frustration with your new hobby. Works for me. |

Re: tools
I have 2 bars of steel, one I have burnt the paint off of, and the other is fresh from the shop, they are 16.25 X 3.5 X .5 inches and I might see about getting some help turning these bars into my first tools. As far as saftey equipment I have a killer pair of leightning shooters earphones, and I have a set of saftey glasses. Here is some of the stuff that I am going looking for for saftey: a pair or two of mid arm leather gauntlets a workable leather apron a set of leather boots (I have a set, but they are nice hiking boots that if I burn, I get to sleep on my porch with the forge as my only source of heat ) Does anyone have a pattern for the hammers, and any suggested handles to use for these things? Can I just pick them up at the lhis (local home improvement store) |
