I do 2 seconds on 2 off 8 times using 12v AC and the stencils are from Ernie so I think the etchant must be the problem. Its not cheap in the UK (nothing is) but I guess its time to order some in!

If the etchant doesn't help then add the DC cycle to your process. All the commercial etchers use both, one makes the impression in the steel and the other puts the black oxides in there to make the mark show up well...

I mark using DC, then use AC to put the black oxide back.
