Trying to pick a camera

Looking for some advice. I'm wondering if the Sony nex-3n will take good knife photo's or if I should go with a digital compact camera. The thing that draws me towards the Sony is the large sensor size and high quality photos, but worried about the detail when taking close ups. I can't afford a macro lens for it and dont even know if its necessary. Lighting is a big factor I know, but I still want a camera with great picture detail. Thanks for any pointers and advice.

Anybody? I know DSLR is preferred but all I'm looking for is someone to check out specs on the nex3n and give me a yes or no please. Even tell me what specs to look for for knife photos. TY

The info I found is mixed. It's a beginner oriented compact camera with short battery life, a cluttered interface and not a whole lot more to recommend it. This is from my go-to source: dpreview.com. It would likely satisfy your needs based on the info in your post. As with any camera you'd have to train yourself to use it effectively. I've heard many good things about the Canon G series compacts. That's where I'd be looking. Good luck. Please post your results in this forum when you do get a new camera.

Thanks. After some research and asking around I keep getting pointed to the canon. Will definitely post pics when I get it.

Sony nex-3n is a good choice. From what I read, it is quick to focus at less than half a second between pressing the shutter button and capturing a shot. As for its lighting, it has a low light sensitivity without flash.

I've been using a Canon that is only 8.0 megapixels, seems to be ok when I get the lighting right. You can see my knife pics in my album on knifenetwork, or on facebook-MVPeterson Custom Knives. All pics were taken with fairly inexpensive Canon.

I use a Canon ELPH 180 and it does OK when I get the lighting right and it's not a mirror polish then it focuses on it's reflection instead of the knife and I have to change the angle. It's a compact too.
