I got a BIG bowie done for the MKA show!

Here's one that will be headed to the MKA show in Missoula on Friday. It's my largest blade to date.

All comments and discussion welcome.

Specs:

Hand-forged from 1075 steel, clay quenched
16 1/2" overall, 11 1/4" blade, .235" thick at the ricasso
Bronze fittings and finial nut
Coined guard and spacer collars
Desert Ironwood handle

And a shot of all the guts.

It's getting glued up before you sell it......right? While "take-downs" are cool, my experience is that if there is a way to tear something up, it's gona happen. Then you get one of those sob story phone calls about how something got wrecked......"Oh, and by the way, can I send it back to for repair?" This usually comes along with the expectation that repairing it is gona be a "freebie".

After several of those, if someone wants me to build them a "take-down", I make it very clear that if something gets wrecked because of them disassembling, and reassembling the knife......repair comes at the cost of my hourly shop rate....which is $65 per hour.

The last time it happened, a fella used a set of slip joint pliers to tighten down the "butt-nut"...... you can image how badly that wrecked it!
I had to wait for the knife to come back to me, fabricate an entire new "nut" and repair the tang threads he messed up.......a full day of work.....
He requested that I "glue up" the knife before sending it back.

By the way...that's a NICE looking knife!

Wow, John!

That unit is stunning! I love that hamon. I'm sure it's gonna take an award or two at the show.

That sure is clean looking John. Love the pins and the coined fittings. I am even happier I ordered 4' of 1075 from Aldo now! I love that looooonnnggg blade! It's pretty close to being a hunting sword! Sweet!

Thanks for all the comments guys. I appreciate the feedback.

Ed- thanks for the notes and I'm right there with you. This one was already glued up at the time of posting.

It's nice for me to be able to take them down during consturction, almost mandatory in fact on a build like this. But then they get glued up and the buyer is told that any attempt to take it apart will completely void the warranty.

Best Bowie @ the MKA

Just want to let everyone know. John was awarded the Best Bowie for this one. Well deserved this knife had everyone talking at the show all weekend.
Congrat's on the award. By the way I got to hold on to this one before it went to the show.

Bing

Thanks for the kind words Bing and the rest.

I had a great time at the show too. I laughed until my sides hurt. It was really good having a table next to Bing.

He's been a great friend and is one of the best examples of the type of quality folk in the knife community.

Ed, thanks for all the mentoring and friendship along the way too. I didn't sell the knife at the show but I did sell it to a collector yesterday.
