DDR3 Bolster Rusted! Help.

Hello Gang.
Several months ago I assembled a DDR3 for my son. Wanting to attach a pocket clip, I heated one of the bolsters with a propane torch (crude I know), then let it air dry so I could drill and tap it...
After it was tapped I reheated it again (same torch) and quenched it in water. So far so good. While finishing the bolster I noticed a hair-line crack in it. Since it was going to be covered up by the clip, I opted to keep it.
About two months later my son shows me the knife and the bolster is completely rusted!
What did I do wrong?
What is the best way to attach a clip to a DDR bolster?
Any help?

Hey Rev...

Can you post a photo of it?

I've probably got an extra one or two, but you may need to resand it to your current handle shape.

How did you get a crack in it?

Alex

Unfortunately I don't have the piece anymore. I send it to the retailer where I bought the kit. They kept it and send me a new one.
Re: crack. I realy don't know. Someone suggested it might have been due to using cold water to quench it???

Thanks Alex.
I'm still interested in attaching a clip to the bolster but don't want to ruin it again. Any suggestions?

You can drill and tap it. I would tap it for 2-56 threads, minimum. The bolster isn't heat treated and doesn't need to be annealed. It's 416SS, engravable.

Drill and tap all the way through the liner, as well. Then flush the screw with the backside of the liner to keep it from scraping the blade.

That should do it!
Let me know if you have any questions.
