Welcome to the Knife Network School of Knife Making

Hi Everyone.

This forum represents a new venture that we're excited to be a part of. We're starting the "World's First, Online Knife Maker Training School" which will be headed up by our very own Don Robinson, headmaster of the school.

We will be offering an organized, subscriber-only forum area for each class, where guys can get one-on-one training with our teachers. The classes will be given using step-by-step images to guide you through the completion of each project.

We'll be offering a ton of great courses. Check back next week and I'll have the schedule ready to post.

PM me if you have any questions.

Alex

Talking Man, I'm pumped and ready to go!

And a great big welcome from me. too!!

I hope some of you guys who have participated in our folding knife making projects from the folder forum threads will find something of interest to you here in one or more of our courses. And anyone else, of course, from a rank beginner to experienced makers who want to branch out to other fields of knifemaking.

Try it, you might like it!!

We will offer complete step by step, start to finish courses in all phases of the knifemaking art, with individual help and advice for each student.

From assembling and finishing fixed blade and folding kit knives to making your own knives of all types, fixed and folding.

Hunting knives, tactical knives, pocket knives, sheath making, filework and embellishment and who knows what else.

Join us for a nominal charge, take any course/s of your choice, and if you want, continue to a master's degree in knifemaking.

Sincerely, we intend to make this the top knifemaking internet on-line school, and give our students the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to become a custom knifemaker and artisan whose work is in demand by the knife market.

So, boys and girls, get ready to sign up for whatever tickles your fancy!!

Classes will be limited in size, so the instructors will be able to give individual help.

We realize that many of you have a day job, so the courses will be scheduled to accommodate working in your spare time. You will be able to advance as fast as you're able at a comfortable speed.

Well heck, my wife is always signing up for quilting classes - and the day I stop learning, you can just shoot me.

Tell us more about this 'nominal charge' Don.

Rob!

Hi, Rob!

The charge will vary depending on the subject, Rob. Alex will post a schedule of classes including prices, start dates and subjects next week. Probably around $30 or so for a beginner's class, which I know you don't need, up to somewhere in the neighborhood of $80 or $90 or so for a complicated folder. And everywhere in between, depending on the subject.

Some class fees will include the cost of material.

We had originally planned to get started next month, but other things have caused a short postponement.

In any case, we'll schedule start dates far enough in advance to give people who are interested time to register and obtain a list of tools and supplies needed in time to have everything on hand before the class starts.

Heck, Alex still has to teach me some of the things I'll need in order to administer the program.

So trade the apt. in on a farm with a big barn with central A/C and heat!

This sounds extremely interesting but to a complete Newbie such as myself, what type of tools are needed? I'm afraid the tool list itself will prevent me from participating.

Sounds like a great idea. I have been thinking seriously of trying my hand at making a folder so the timing couldn't be better.
Do you have a projected start date?
Will you accept Paypal payments?
Do you have a tentative list of courses that you are thinking of offering?
How do I subscribe to this forum so I get all updates about these courses?
Can you tell I am interested?

Great Idea
Thanks
STeve

Eddie, a list of all the tools, equipment and supplies needed for each individual course will be provided so that an individual can decide whether he has the needed equipment to participate, or will need to purchase equipment before taking the course.

This will involve metalworking and woodworking tools and equipment basically, with additional tools necessary for making sheaths and embellishment.

We'll offer kit making courses, in which case the knife kit will be furnished as a part of the course. In those cases, you'll need a hand drill, some drills and reamers, files, sandpaper, etc.

In advanced courses, you'll need a drill press and a belt sander at the least.

We'll provide lists of sources for tools and supplies for each course.

I'm in, but I don't have a lot of the tools such as a belt sander.

I just have a Triton saw and an oilstone.

Steve, I thought I had answered your questions, but somehow I got distracted I guess.

The start date is January 1, 2006. Schedules and other information will be announced next week.

We'll have to leave it up to Alex whether to accept PayPal. He's handling the business end of things. Personally, I think it would be great to accept PayPal. Especially for makers like yourself who are outside the U.S.

The starting list of courses will be announced next week. We'll definitely offer more than one kind of folder class.

Just follow this thread until we get everything together for updates.

Yep, Steve, I can tell you're interested!!

A Triton diamond band saw? That might just work, PJ. We'll see, won't we? In any case, a hacksaw or jeweler's saw will work, but it's slow. Lots of makers have filed the flats on a blade, and some of the great artists still do.
