You ask me like I carried out the small German nickel piece. It is very simple; I possess a professional lathe of small size, but with the benefits of a big lathe. I learned how to lathe during 5 years in a self taught way and I made my best works.
To carry out this piece takes a long time some minutes in to lathe and to work later with jeweler's file.
I send them a picture of my best work (I took months in making it and I showed it a while ago) you can appreciate after carrying out this knife, the because I say that is simple to make this small piece with a lathe.

What type of carving tool are you using to relife carve the horn? Is it a dremel? And are you undercutting the relife with the carving tool?

I cannot wait to see the finished product!!!

To carve the ivory I use the Dremel, to reduce the bottom of the one carved and with small burins in different ways the fine finish ;
then, the shady one with very fine lines, I use a very fine tip coupled to the rotal?n Dremel.

Was the relife work on the guard etched with acid? or was it engraved with a graver?
I noticed that the blade is covered with a resist, Im assuming that it will be etched. Could you share what your resist is made from? And what type of acid you use?
