Show us ya grinder!

I don't know what it is, but I am fascinated with these wonderful belt grinders. I built mine last year based on Rob's fantastic KMG, and have just finished mounting up a 2 HP motor with Variable Speed Controller (KBAC-27D) supplied by State Electric. I finished it up with a hammer-finish green paint.

I received a ton of help and advice from this forum, and thank all those who helped during my project.

Anyway, I thought it would be great to see everyones grinders, with a brief spec list. If you're interested, upload your photos and give us a peek at the 'bread and butter' of your knife making, the mighty belt grinder!

For those with broadband, here is a clip of my grinder.

interesting drive shaft set-up (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/....php?t=31615):

an other interesting drive shaft assembly(seems even better than the previous one to me)(http://www.britishblades.com/forums/....php?t=31156):

great idea for a stone grinder optional:

very good belt grinder table with the motor low:

Riverside machine and tool 1 1/4 H.P. 220vt DC Leeson motor with a Baldor electronic controller. The motor speed is from 0 - 3600 RPM. It comes with flat platen (10") slack belt, steady rest, 4" and 2" contact wheels. I have added a HT'd 1/4" thick O1 steel platten that is bolted onto the OEM platten with four 1/4" machine screws.

heres my frankengrinder....see the quality of the welding...the brand new shiny steel, the pallet trolley wheels...it takes 108 by 2 inch belts cause thats the most common size we can get. see even us wood workers can build grinders!!! not pretty but it works ok.ive got a big pully for it too so its a 2 speed model

see i carefully cleaned my bench especially for the photo too.

heres my setup for grooving out guards(my least liked job)this roughs them out in no time at all, then just a little filing and done.
cheers, case

Thanks Casey,

You can get the contact wheels in Aust but they are expensive.

I have a 8 inch wheel but I am thinking of doing a 12 or 14 inch wheel as well. Your reply is the 2nd favourable reply, about using wooden wheels. Looks like I have to get into it.

re grinders

HI GUYS,

here is a pic of a grinder I recently made up,on the question of wooden wheels ,the drive pulley on the grinder is red gum.

On the first grinder i made the drive wheels are made from mdf also the large platen wheels the largest being 11 inch.I glued high density foam on the large wheels and they are still going strong.

regards Daniel didtas.

Wow, that is some heavy engineering...I love the solid rear bearing housing. Part number 3 must be a piece of channel? And 5, nice work on the machining to recess this. I guess this runs a very long belt?
Great work.

Very Cool machines!! I love looking at these all the photos. Farki...WOW!!! I love it!!

This machine was custom built for a mobile sharpening service serving beauty salons in the Hollywood and Beverly Hills area. It is used to sharpen scissors and nippers.

That is not a stone...but a bear-tex finishing wheel. It's like a hard scothbright pad and does some very light deburring and produces a satin, brushed finish. I'm not sure exactly how the customer uses it...but I hear from him about once a year when he buys a new contact wheel...and he seems to really like the machine.

Keep the pics coming!!
