Pressure cooker problem

Hi guys,

I'm now working on a set up for stabilizing wood. I don't have the vacuum pump yet, so I started with the pressure parts.
I've just installed a pressure gauge and a pump valve (air inlet?) to a pressure cooker (Tefal).
When I put some pressure on it, the needle on the gauge doesn't move a bit, but the security pin on the cooker goes up in a very short time
Surely there's some pressure, but I don't think it's enought.
I think, I'll have to remove the security pin, but how safe is it???
To how much (safe) pressure can such a cooker go

Bernez,

I can't help on the pressure cooker aspect,I havn't tried that way yet.

But if you are still looking for a vac pump give ebay a look. I got a gast diaphram pump for $32 that retails for over $250 in perfect working order.

Also if you look try misspelling vacume, vaccum, vacum, any concevable way to butcher the word and you will find more for sale. I tried it spelled correctly and there were about 250 of them then the various gramatical modifications produced another dozen pumps with very few bids on them, I was the only bidder on my vacum pump, heh heh ,I like that option.

see ya
Mike

Mike,

I already got a hand vacuum pump from e-bay (Mityvac) but it's still on its way to The Netherlands.
I'll look, in time, at an electric pump like yours.

I have to agree with the ebay comment. I bought a Commercial Thomas vacuum pump that was used for $32. It came out of some type of equipment and had every thing I needed to plug it in and go (wiring, capacitor, etc.). I don't really remember the specifications on it but I think it went to about -30 psi or better. I think a pressure cooker should do well as long as it is not modified too much(drilling a bunch of holes in the lid). There are some guys here that know a lot more about this than I do. If you do a search in tool time on wood stabilization devices you will find some good info. I built mine and it is still working great thanks to some good advise from this forum. NT

Pressure cooker

Bernez,

I use a pressure cooker for my stabilizing. As I do not have a photo hosting capability, if you email me, I'll send a photo of the valve system I use. One valve for 50lbs of air, the other for vacuum. You can get a venturi type vacuum pump from Harbor Freight for about $10.00.

Thx guys,

But, I still don't know how much pressure would be safe to use.

Bearpaw, I mailed you last night.

Bernez,
You need to be very careful, you could be injured or killed. I don't think any of us can give you an exact pressure that would be safe. The safety pin is suppose to let pressure out and prevent over pressurizing the cooker. I think you need to put a new gauge on it to make sure there is or is not pressure in it. If there is no pressure you probably have a bad safety pin. I would not run any more pressure in it than the safety would allow.
