Andy,
If you ever get over near Asheville, NC, get Bill Wiggins or Rick Lowe or somone to take you by the Haywood Community College and visit their forging and blacksmith "Metals" building. One whole wall is lined with these bad boys and there were more in the green coal forge room. Batson used one in one of his demos as well. Nifty hammer for sure.

To purchase plans or get in on a build, contact Clay. Builds cost any where from $1000 to $1500 depending on how many are built and material selection. Sometimes he has or knows someone who has a hammer for sale.

I got one from Ray Kirk when he upgraded to an air hammer. Very nice machine. The only upgrades I've done is I had to weld a bead on the motor frame/motor, the spot welds holding the base on were breaking free of the motor, and I welded a 1" thick plate to the base to help add mass, the 1/2" plate was starting to warp a bit, and bolted the thing down to a concrete foundation. It runs like a champ, great control and hits HARD.

Tire hammer build coming up in Wetumpka Alabama... can't quite remember when... $1250... they're set up to build 15 hammers and last I heard had several slots left. Probably info on the AFC site at www.alaforge.org/events.htm. I like mine a lot, and the workshop was a lot of fun.

Hi,
I'ld like to resurrect this thread to ask a fairly specific topic. I do plan on building one of these, I do not plan on taking the course unless it shows up in the tucson/phoenix/flagstaff/payson area of Arizona. I'm trying to figure out what the tire is running on. I've seen a list of build materials that spec'd a rear axle shaft with bearing and plates but cannot understand why.

Wouldn't it be easier to just grab unitized bearing/wheel assembly from the front wheels of a rear wheel drive vehicle? If anyone's got pictures of how the tire/bearing/axle gets mounted: I sure would appreciate it.

Regards,
James

Eigther way would probably work, the reason for the rear axle assembly is that it's from a front wheel drive car, just cut the axle and you've got everything you need in one unit. I had thought of just using pillow block bearings.

If you can get the plans, they explain a lot and show the relationships. The toggle links are almost exactly the same dimentions from pivot hole to pivot hole as a 50lb little giant. The plans will give you what springs and such and good sources to get them along with detailed shop drawing of what holes to put and where.

Plans? I had thought that these are currently non-existent for the tire-hammer? If you've got a contact I can probably spend the 30-60 plans would cost.

Regards,
James

PS: And thanks for responding to such an old thread. just call me a gravedigger.

For the workshop they specify an axle assembly from a Dodge/Chrysler minivan of certain model years. Probably other front wheel drives are similar and these are just known to work with the tools and methods that Clay had worked out. No need even to cut an axle, the assembly just unbolts - and then bolts on the hammer. I had a harder time finding the matching spare tire than I did finding the axle assembly.

I have one of these and will never part with it. Clay does a great job making these. I went to the workshop and we made 15 if I remember correctly. If I had to do it over again, I'd just buy one from Clay, man that was a lot of work in 4 days, and the guys at Haywood had already done a good bit of preparation work before the workshop even started!

I am counting on your recommendation. I am building one now. Where can I get one spring? His supplier sells quantities starting with two! I'm also looking for someone who will loan me a set up jig to save having to make one.
