Problem with my forge?

Hi Ed,

I am having a problem with my forge. I was forging the yesterday and Gene Martin came over to use my LG and I thought my tank was freezing up so I changed bottles went OK for a few minutes then it started doing the same thing. So today I filled my large bottle (100#) which I never have trouble with and Gene came over to finish his projects and I started a couple and most of the time the forge is acting like the bottle is freezing and discovered it is the hose that is freezing up. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

if your shop photos are still current... it looks like you are feeding your burner with high pressure hose. If there is someway to add metal tubing (alumimun, copper, ...) That will pick up some of the heat from the air in the shop it may help, the rubber could be acting as an insulator.

Just a thought!

If your shop is really cold how about trying some sort of electric heater? I have seen some that look like heating pads that wrap around pipes and heat them to keep them from freezing during cold winters.

Before you go changing out hoses, it might be wise to take the hose off and then blow through it with compressed air. This has occurred to me a few times over the years and in all cases a small particle was lodged near the orifice, restricting the gas flow. It not very common for hoses to freeze up, so when they do it generally indicates another type of problem.

Thanks guys, I have not had a problem till recently. I will blow the hose out to see if something may have gotten in it. I have never seen a hose freeze up before so I figured something was up. It has been cold but it has been way colder last year and I had no problem. I will keep ya posted if I find anything in the hose.

Glad to hear things are working now! The first time something like that happened to me, I was dumb enough to just blow out the hose, and didn't think about the orifice......and I kept having the same troubles. When I finally decided to check the orifice, there was a tiny chunk of ???? (who knows what). The thing wasn't much bigger than a pin point, but everything worked afterI got rid of it. I stumbled around for about a week trying to figure out what was wrong before the light came on.

Merry Christmas!!!

It could be that you are getting liquid propane in you hose If you are running a fairly high pressure and a longish hose. With a blown system you need more volume than pressure. if you have problems again try increasing the size of your orafice and reducing the pressure in the lines.

Burke at most I will run at 4psi and I use an adjustable needle valve. Today my friend Gene Martin and I were welding running at 1 1/2psi and not a single problem it must have been something in the hose.

Mike, I suspect you have some folder parts stuck in your venturi.

Hi Don well I don't have a venturi > The harder I try to make time to work on the folders the more crap comes up. Like Gene coming over to use my LG because he blew a seal in his press. I think I will just have to wait for the holiday madness to get over with to get back to them.

How are you feeling? I hope your back in the shop now.
